What is Yoga?

Yoga, which means 'yoke' or 'union' in Sanskrit, is both a philosophical system and a science whose goal is the attainment of self-awareness. An ancient discipline that originated in India several thousands of years ago, yoga uses physical exercises, proper breathing, mental focus and conscious awareness to bring about a harmonious self — uniting body, mind, breath and spirit. Ultimately, the path of yoga leads to the constant experience of the self.

What are the benefits of yoga?
Of course, each individual who practices yoga will see different benefits. But the immediate and long term effects of a yoga practice can be numerous, including: increased energy, increased flexibility, increased coordination, improved breathing, improved strength, stress and anxiety relief ... to mention a few.

I've never done yoga before, how do I begin?
The best way to start is to just come in and take a class. Classes are offered on a drop-in basis but signing-up for the session will not only give you the best pricing — but it is also a great way to establish a solid foundation for your practice and to commit to improving your health.

Which class would be appropriate for me?
You can check out our Class Descriptions and Class Schedule to find a class and time that works for you. If you are unsure of which class or level will best suit your needs, please contact us for help in selecting the most appropriate class.

Do I need to register beforehand?
No, there is no need to pre-register or reserve a spot and students are welcome to drop-in (except for Yoga for Injuries & Special Conditions). Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your first class to sign-in and fill out a Registration Form.

How do I pay for class?
You may pay with cash, check (payable to Body Balance Yoga) or credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover). The instructor or any assistants will help to guide you through the sign-in process.

What should I wear?
Exercise/workout clothes that are comfortable and easy to move in and do not restrict your movement. It is helpful for instructors to be able to easily see the contours of your body so that they can assure that you are in proper alignment. No need to wear shoes or socks; yoga is practiced in bare feet. Please avoid strong smelling perfumes or lotions, as others may be sensitive.

What should I bring?
We encourage students to bring their own mats if they have one along with any other personal yoga props. A limited number of studio mats are available and all other props are provided — straps, blocks, balls, etc. Water bottles are welcome in the studio.

Is there a place to change clothes? ... and store my things during class?
Yes, bathrooms and/or changing rooms are available. Please bring your valuables into the classroom.

Can I eat or drink before class?
It is advisable to practice yoga on an empty stomach. For a more comfortable practice, try to avoid eating anything heavy within 2 hours of class. It is a good idea to come to class well hydrated and always remember to drink plenty of water after yoga class.

I am running late to class ... can I still join the class?
Yes, join us anyway! But please be respectful of the teacher and your fellow students and wait until the opening chant or meditation is finished before entering class or setting up your mat and props.

If I have a past injury, illness or special condition, can I practice yoga?
Yes, yoga benefits many people who are dealing with chronic pain or special conditions by helping the body to regain its balance, strength and flexibility. Before class begins, please inform the instructor about anything that might affect your practice, such as injuries, illnesses, pregnancy, chronic health conditions, etc. or any other concerns you may have so that they are better able to modify and adapt poses to your situation. Body Balance Yoga teachers are skilled at helping you adjust the practice to your individual needs.

Can pregnant women do yoga?
Yes. In fact, yoga can be very beneficial during pregnancy but there are some precautions. You will want to let your doctor know that you are starting a yoga practice and also inform your instructor that you are pregnant. It is recommended that you avoid inversions, twisting, pranayama, abdominal strengthening poses and lying on your belly during practice. Be sure to drink plenty of water and take bathroom breaks whenever needed. Our Gentle/Beginner Yoga classes are appropriate for pregnant women just starting out with a yoga practice.

Can I practice during menstruation?
Yes, however it is recommended that women who are menstruating should avoid inverted poses during practice.

How many times per week should I take class?
As often as possible, but you will find it very beneficial to take 2 or 3 yoga classes a week; less if you are supplementing your studio classes with a home practice. But even if you can only fit one class in a week you will see and feel a noticeable difference. If you can do more than that, you will certainly experience more benefits. Many of our students make a commitment to attending the same classes per week and others just come when it is convenient for them.

I missed a couple of classes ... can I do a make-up?
Yes. As a courtesy, Body Balance Yoga allows missed classes to be made up at any location, any time during the current session only (except for Yoga for Injuries & Special Conditions). You may do them in advance of anticipated absences or bring a friend as your make-up. No credits/refunds for missed classes.
